Acne is a muti-factorial skin condition. Genetics, hormones and environmental factors all play a role in the severity of acne

The basic lesion of acne is a closed or blocked pore c
alled a 'comedone'. Comedones can be 'open'- called blackheads, or 'closed' called whiteheads.  Pimples or 'pustules' form in the blocked sebaceous or oil glands. Blackheads are NOT caused by dirt and are NOT due to a buildup of dirt in the pores.   Scrubbing does NOT improve acne and in fact excessive harsh scrubbing of the fact can make acne worse by breaking already damaged pores and causing more inflammation.

Some over the counter medications are useful for treating mild acne. One common over-the-counter medication ingredient is
benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl Peroxide is somewhat antibacterial and somewhat effective against comedones.  Acne sufferers should know that benzoyl peroxide can bleach clothes or towels (due to the peroxide). Some patients are irritated by benzoyl peroxide and others may be allergic to it. It is wise to stop using benzoyl peroxide medications if you experience irritation, itching, burning or excessive redness.

No acne medication, even over the counter medications, should be used in pregnancy or while nursing unless you have discussed it with your he
alth care provider. More difficult acne cases, or acne that doesn't resolve should be treated by your medical doctor or dermatologist.  There are many prescription products, including tretinoin, topical and oral antibiotics, among others, which when prescribed and used properly, can help keep acne in check.  Discuss your options and develop a plan for acne control, with your health care provider.
