FDA Approves Acanya - new Acne Fighting Topical Medication
|
Acanya is a new Dow Pharmaceutical gel, which is a combination of clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%.
The FDA approved Acanya for the treatment of acne, in patients age 12 or over.
The two active ingredients in Acanya are:
- Clindamycin, which is a topical antibiotic. Clindamycin is available in a number of acne medications and is used to decrease the number of acne causing bacteria P.acnes.
- Benzoyl peroxide 2.5%, which is a staple in acne treatment medications, both as prescription and over the counter.
Benzoyl peroxide is somewhat comedolytic, meaning effective in removing blackheads and whiteheads, and also mildly effective in reducing acne-causing bacteria.
More importantly, the addition of Benzoyl peroxide to the topical antibiotic, may help in reducing the potential for antibiotic resistance to the clindamycin.
